Police in the Federal Capital Territory have foiled a kidnap attempt in Byazhin, Abuja and recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition after a gun battle with suspected kidnappers.

‎FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said in a statement on Friday that operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit stormed the area at about 12:34 a.m. on Thursday following intelligence reports of suspected kidnappers around Redeemed Church, Byazhin.

‎The suspects opened fire on sighting the police, triggering an exchange of gunfire that lasted over 30 minutes. The operatives repelled the attackers, forcing them to flee into nearby bushes with suspected gunshot wounds.

‎Items recovered included one AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and seven rounds of live ammunition. Two intended victims, a man and his wife, were rescued unharmed.
‎
‎Commissioner of Police FCT, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, commended the officers and ordered increased patrols in the area.
