The United Nations and the Nigerian government have condemned the abduction of school children in Oyo and Borno states, describing the attacks as a threat to education and child protection.
In a statement, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, expressed concern over the worsening insecurity in schools and called for urgent measures to secure learning spaces.
He said: “Schools must be safe havens for learning, not targets for violence. The abduction of children violates their rights and disrupts education. We urge authorities to act swiftly to secure schools and ensure the safe return of all abducted children.”
Gunmen reportedly attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, kidnapping several pupils and teachers. In Borno, suspected insurgents also abducted students from a secondary school in Gwoza LGA during a raid last week.
The Federal Ministry of Education condemned the incidents and reiterated government’s commitment to implementing the Safe Schools Initiative and other measures to protect students and teachers nationwide.
