GUSAU — The Zamfara State Council of Traditional Rulers has expressed concern over the growing misuse of social media, warning that insults, misinformation and defamatory content are fueling tensions and undermining peace in the state.
In a statement reported by security expert Bakatsine on X, the council urged social media users to verify information before sharing it and to avoid abusive content. It also called for the responsible use of digital platforms.
The traditional rulers further called on security agencies to take legal action against anyone found using social media to spread falsehoods, incite violence or defame others.
The council stressed that freedom of expression should never be used as a cover for hate speech, misinformation or actions capable of disrupting public peace.
Rising Concern Over Online Content
The warning comes amid increasing cases of unverified reports and inflammatory posts on social media platforms, which authorities say have contributed to rising tension and insecurity in parts of Zamfara and the North West region.
