As the world marks World Sickle Cell Day today, Wife of the Imo State Governor, Chioma Uzodimma, has called for equity in care and urgent action to close the survival gap for patients.
In a post on her verified X handle on Friday, Mrs Uzodimma described sickle cell disease as “one of the most pressing yet under-prioritised health concerns across Nigeria and the African continent.”
She noted that thousands of families battle the inherited blood disorder yearly, often without adequate access to screening, treatment, or psychosocial support.
“This year’s global theme, ‘Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Care,’ calls on us to confront the disparities that determine who survives with this condition, and who does not,” she said.
The governor’s wife stated that through her initiative, Goodhope Women Flourish Initiative, GHWFI, closing the gap begins with awareness, early genotype screening before marriage, accessible healthcare for affected children and adults, and public enlightenment.
“We stand with sickle cell warriors, caregivers, and survivors everywhere, reaffirming our commitment to a future where every individual has equitable access to quality care and the chance to live a full, healthy life,” she added.
