The State Working Committee, SWC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State has condemned statements and actions attributed to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Hon. Chris Nkwonta ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state.
In a communiqué issued on Monday, after its meeting in Umuahia, the SWC described the utterances as unstatesmanlike, irresponsible, embarrassing and inimical to the unity and electoral prospects of the APC in Abia.
The Committee said it was particularly concerned that at a time the Party was mobilising across the 184 wards of the state, comments capable of undermining members’ confidence, while openly projecting support for a rival political party, amounted to a serious breach of party loyalty.
According to the SWC, Senator Kalu was reported in a national television interview to have declared that “Governor Otti of the Labour Party will win the governorship election.”
It also expressed disappointment that Hon. Nkwonta, in the presence of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, publicly stated that he would vote for Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party in 2027.
The SWC said the actions constitute anti-party activities and a violation of Article 21.2 (11) of the APC Constitution, 2022, which provides for disciplinary action against members whose conduct is inimical to the Party.
Resolutions
The SWC resolved to strongly condemn the statements and actions of Senator Kalu and Hon. Nkwonta, describing them as unacceptable and inimical to the collective interest of the APC in Abia State.
The Committee also called on both men to tender an unreserved public apology to the APC, its leadership, members and supporters in Abia State within 14 days from the date of the communiqué.
It further resolved that failure to comply within the stipulated period would leave the Party with no option but to constitute a disciplinary committee to investigate the circumstances and make appropriate recommendations.
The SWC added that where found liable, the Party would withdraw political support and privileges from any of the individuals and apply disciplinary measures as prescribed by the APC Constitution, without fear or favour.
The Committee reaffirmed the commitment of Abia APC to strengthen the Party, support its candidates and work tirelessly towards winning the governorship and all legislative seats in the 2027 general elections.
The SWC insisted that the APC is bigger than any individual and urged all members, especially those in leadership positions, to demonstrate discipline, loyalty and commitment to the Party.
The communiqué was signed by 17 members of the Abia APC SWC present at the meeting. It was made available to journalists by the State Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru.
