The Senate has defended the passage of the Constitution Alteration (State Police) Bill, 2026, describing it as a product of national consensus and urgent necessity, not political expediency.
In a statement, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele said the Bill cannot be delayed because of any individual’s political aspirations.
According to him, the proposal followed extensive consultations, including memoranda to the Senate Constitution Review Committee, public hearings across all six geopolitical zones, and inputs from the Executive, Governors’ Forum, Speakers’ Conference, and the Nigeria Police.
The Senate said the Bill enjoyed broad bipartisan support, with 84 out of 109 members voting in favour, representing 77 percent approval. It added that opposition parties also backed it in the national interest.
The Senate further urged opposition parties to present ideas that will deepen peace and stability across the country.
