Bandits operating in Zamfara State have begun deploying Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, during attacks, marking a deadlier turn in North-West insecurity.

‎Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dalijan Bello, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on security operations in the state.

‎Bello said investigations revealed a dangerous collaboration between bandit gangs and Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters.

‎He stated that the goal of the alliance is to acquire expertise in manufacturing landmines and IEDs for attacks.

‎According to him, bandit groups have started burying IEDs along major transit routes in Zamfara, targeting both security operatives and civilians.

‎The CP said the police have made major breakthroughs in dismantling the bomb network. He confirmed that nine key IED manufacturing suspects were identified, with eight already arrested and in custody. Manhunt is ongoing for the remaining suspect.

‎“Until his death, Superintendent Abdurazak Musa, head of the state Bomb Disposal Unit, and his team saved countless lives by detecting and neutralising explosives across the state,” Bello added.

‎He vowed that police would intensify technical capacity and manhunts across the region to counter the new terrorist tactics.

‎The shift from cattle rustling and farmer-herder clashes to mass abductions, illegal taxation, and now IED attacks shows how insecurity has evolved and spread across Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger and Kebbi states.
