Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State says the recruitment of 6,030 teaching staff for primary and secondary schools across the state represents a significant investment in the future of children in the state.

‎According to Uzodimma, the expansion of the teaching workforce is expected to improve learning outcomes across Imo.

‎”The recruitment of 6,030 teaching staff for our Primary and Secondary Schools across the State represents a significant investment in the future of our children and the quality of education they receive.
‎
‎”We expect this expansion of the teaching workforce to bring renewed energy to our schools, improve teacher-to-pupil ratios, and enhance the overall quality of learning across the State,” Governor Uzodimma wrote.

‎The recruitment comes at a time when Nigeria is battling a severe teacher shortage.
‎
‎Data from the Federal Ministry of Education’s Digital Management System (DNEMIS) reveals that just 592,077 teachers are serving nearly 32 million learners in public schools, with an average learner-to-teacher ratio of 54:1, far exceeding international benchmarks of 25:1 to 35:1.

‎The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has consistently warned that unreplaced retirements and prolonged hiring freezes are crippling the public school system, citing a Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) survey that identified a deficit of 194,876 teachers in public primary schools.
‎
‎Education stakeholders say poor compensation, low morale and rural posting challenges have made teaching a career of last resort, leaving many rural schools with only one or two teachers to handle an entire school.
‎
‎Governor Uzodimma’s announcement is therefore seen as a direct intervention to address the manpower gap at the state level.
