The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, says over 600 pupils and teachers have been abducted in school-related attacks across Nigeria between March 2024 and May 2026.
SERAP, in a statement published on its official website, said the abductions occurred despite the Federal Government’s allocation of ₦145 billion to the Safe Schools Initiative.
The group called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and anti-corruption agencies to investigate allegations that the Safe Schools funds are missing, mismanaged, or diverted.
“Anyone found responsible should be brought to justice, and any missing funds fully recovered,” SERAP said.
The organisation cited the recent abduction of dozens of students and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State as evidence that schools remain exposed to attacks.
SERAP also urged President Tinubu and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to ensure the safe release of the abducted victims and arrest their abductors.
It warned that it would pursue legal action if the recommended measures are not implemented, arguing that corruption in education security undermines children’s right to education and violates constitutional obligations to protect lives.
