The National Sports Commission, NSC, has promised to make up for Nigeria’s absence at the ongoing World Cup by winning medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, gave the assurance when the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, hosted Team Nigeria to the Commonwealth Games at the State House, Abuja, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
Gbajabiamila said government had fulfilled its role in preparing the athletes and urged them to surpass Nigeria’s best record from the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
“Most importantly,” he said, “compete fairly and protect the values of honour and integrity of the country.”
Dikko described the Glasgow outing as an opportunity to compensate Nigerians for the country’s non-appearance at the World Cup. He said the National Organizing Committee had taken necessary steps to ensure adequate preparations.
A total of 72 athletes will represent Nigeria in various events at the Games, scheduled to hold from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow.
