Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5m on a three-year deal.
The London club confirmed the signing of the 33-year-old World Cup winner on Sunday. He becomes the eighth transfer between the two clubs in the past four years.
Martinez, a former Arsenal goalkeeper, joined Villa in 2020 and made 256 appearances for the club. He was also in goal as Villa lifted the Europa League trophy last season.
”I’m delighted to be at this football club,” Martinez said. “Coming to Chelsea, for me and my family, was an easy decision to make and I’m just over the moon – I can’t wait to get started.
”I want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club because it’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”
The deal comes just a week after striker Nicolas Jackson moved from Chelsea to Villa for £65m.
No two Premier League clubs have exchanged more players on permanent or loan deals since 2022.
The relationship began after Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, took over and signed Carney Chukwuemeka from Villa for £20m. Other moves include Ian Maatsen to Villa for £37.5m, Omari Kellyman to Chelsea for £19m, and Axel Disasi on a £5m loan to Villa.
This summer alone has seen four deals. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for £117m, while Alejandro Garnacho moved to Villa on loan with a conditional obligation to buy worth around £43m.
Since 2022, Chelsea have paid Villa £163.5m for players. Villa have spent £102.5m on Chelsea players, a figure that could rise to £150.5m if Garnacho’s loan becomes permanent — terms Chelsea believe are easily reachable.
