The 19 Northern Governors, under the auspices of the Northern Governors’ Forum, have approved a collective contribution of ₦1 billion monthly to the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund, NNSTF, to combat insecurity in the region.
This was one of the major outcomes of a joint meeting with the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held in Kaduna on Tuesday.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, disclosed this in a statement on X. He said the meeting also witnessed the inauguration of a 21-member Board of Trustees for the NNSTF.
According to him, the Fund is a regional initiative designed to provide sustainable support for intelligence gathering, inter-state security coordination and strategic interventions to restore peace across Northern Nigeria.
Mutfwang said the governors resolved that insecurity requires coordinated action backed by sustainable financing to complement ongoing federal government efforts and strengthen the regional security architecture.
He announced that former Senator Napoleon Bali will represent Plateau State on the Board of Trustees.
The Governor said the meeting also addressed the root causes of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and the challenge of out-of-school children.
He added that the governors reaffirmed commitment to increased investments in education, agriculture, youth empowerment, skills development and community resilience.
Mutfwang further stated that the Forum resolved to work more closely with traditional rulers, local governments, security agencies and community leaders to strengthen intelligence gathering and protect farming communities during the rainy season.
He commended the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for their leadership.
