The Nigerian Legion has reaffirmed commitment to veterans’ welfare and reintegration, urging the Federal Government to create a dedicated Ministry of Veterans Affairs to coordinate policies and programmes for retired military personnel.

‎Speaking at the Legion’s 62nd anniversary, National Chairman Grace Morenike Henry said veterans are national assets whose sacrifices deserve respect and support. “The nation that forgets those who sacrificed for her will not move forward,” she stated.

‎Henry said the Legion is intensifying efforts to restore dignity through improved healthcare, affordable housing, and stronger welfare support for veterans and widows of fallen soldiers.

‎Henry identified inadequate funding as the major challenge. The Legion depends largely on proceeds from the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund, which she described as insufficient.

‎She called for deliberate government policies to strengthen the organisation financially and grant greater operational autonomy.

‎The Nigerian Legion was established in 1964 as a statutory body for ex-servicemen to provide welfare support, facilitate reintegration, and assist families of fallen heroes.

‎Also speaking, retired MWO Comfort Victory Bassey described the Legion as a valuable support system that offers guidance on entitlements, advocacy, welfare checks, and platforms for veterans to remain active in society.
