The Abia State Police Command says it has apprehended 17 suspected cultists aged 18 to 28 years in Aba.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said there had been a recent upsurge in cult-related activities in the state.
She cited the attack on 13/05/2026 at No. 29 Brass Road, Aba, where a young man was shot and macheted to death by suspected cultists; and the attack on 24/05/2026 at Ehere, near Opobo Junction, where another young man was shot by suspected cultists.
According to her, leveraging actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) took the fight to the criminals and successfully apprehended the 17 suspects linked to the incidents.
“The suspects were arrested at their various meeting points and while en route to perpetrate further crimes. The above-listed exhibits were recovered from them. Investigation has been concluded and the suspects are being charged to court,” Chinaka said.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa, reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, as well as preventing and detecting crime in the state.
He assured Abians that there would be no hiding place for cultism and other criminal activities in the state.
While the Command continues its awareness campaign through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) unit in schools and communities, it advised the public to partner with the police by reporting suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or via the Command’s emergency hotlines: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, 08079210006.
