The Abia State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into a viral video alleging that officers from Owerrinta Divisional Police Station were linked to the death of a civilian during an arrest.

‎The Command, in a statement signed by PPRO, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the allegations were made by a young girl and her family on Facebook.

‎According to police account, a complaint of alleged cassava theft was lodged against the family of Nwachukwu Abraham on June 23, 2026.

‎The Investigating Police Officer, IPO, and his team proceeded to effect an arrest the following day. Police said the suspect told the IPO he was ill, having been recently discharged for kidney and liver disease. The village head confirmed his condition, and the IPO directed that he report to the station by 8:00 a.m. the next day.

‎Police added that the suspect’s wife and two daughters were taken to the station for statements.

‎Following the intervention of the Local Government Mayor, the DPO ordered their release to the community’s woman leader, with a directive to return the next day.

‎The daughters were later brought without their parents, and the family is yet to honour a subsequent invitation, the police said.

‎“The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, has directed that the DPO and all parties involved be brought to the Command Headquarters for interview, after which the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation,” the statement read.

‎The Command said a discreet investigation had been launched to establish the true circumstances of the incident.

‎It reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the rule of law, and urged the public to refrain from speculation pending the outcome.
