The Federal High Court has issued new Practice Directions requiring all its registries nationwide to open on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays exclusively for pre-election matters.
The Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, signed the directives, which take immediate effect. The court said the move is to ensure the “fair, impartial, and expeditious determination” of election-related suits ahead of the 2027 polls.
Under the new rules, registries will receive pre-election filings on weekends and holidays to address the time-sensitive nature of the cases.
To speed up hearings, the court will limit adjournments to a maximum of two per party. It will also prioritise the settlement of interlocutory issues and encourage amicable resolution before full trial.
The Practice Directions further authorise the use of email and other electronic means to notify counsel of urgent proceedings and case events.
Where the directives are silent, the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules, 2019, will apply.
