The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an industrial disagreement with the Federal Government and issued a new four-week ultimatum to implement outstanding demands, warning of a nationwide strike if unresolved.
The decision was taken at an Extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held virtually at the weekend, following the expiration of a previous 21-day ultimatum.
In a communiqué signed by President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, Secretary-General Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Publicity Secretary Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, NARD said it “can no longer guarantee industrial harmony” beyond the new deadline.
The association accused the Federal Government and some health institutions of failing to meet commitments on doctors’ welfare, including unpaid salaries, allowances, and entitlements.
Key unresolved issues include the non-disbursement of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) despite repeated assurances. NARD also condemned the victimisation of members at OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, and attempts to reintroduce bench fees for resident doctors in private hospitals.
While acknowledging progress on protecting healthcare workers in some states, NARD said implementation of federal agreements remains slow.
It has mandated its National Officers’ Committee to prepare for industrial action if compliance is not demonstrated within four weeks. NARD will review the situation at its July 2026 NEC meeting in Gombe.
