The Abia State Chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has disowned statements credited to Ikechukwu Martin Apugo directing the voting pattern of people in Umuahia Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The State Publicity Secretary of the party, Rtn. Emeka Luis Okoro, MNCS, said this in a press statement issued on Monday in Umuahia.
Mr. Okoro said the party’s attention has been drawn to a viral video interview in which Hon. Apugo made political pronouncements that voting in 2027 “shall not be by party” and further comments on the governorship election.
According to him, Hon. Apugo, as an individual member of the party, has no locus standi to direct, dictate or determine where the people of Umuahia Federal Constituency should cast their votes.
“He is neither the flag bearer of the party for the constituency, nor a recognized party administrator with such mandate,” the Publicity Secretary stated.
Mr. Okoro said the people of Umuahia Federal Constituency reserve their constitutional right under Section 77(2) of the 1999 Constitution to freely elect their representatives without intimidation, coercion or personal directives from any individual.
He added that the party takes very seriously any action that tends toward anti-party activities, and assured that the relevant organs of the NDC shall interpret his actions in line with the provisions of the party constitution and take necessary steps to uphold discipline, unity and the collective interest of the party.
The Publicity Secretary urged all members to remain calm, focused and committed to the process of harmonization and strategic planning for the 2026 campaigns and 2027 general elections as already scheduled by the party leadership.
“No individual can speak for the collective will of the people,” he said.
