The Federal Government has described Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance as a “milestone worthy of celebration” as it commemorates Democracy Day 2026.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the day provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and honour the sacrifices of pro-democracy patriots.
“Democracy Day occupies a unique place in our national calendar. It provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our democratic journey, celebrate the resilience of our institutions, and honour the sacrifices of patriots who stood firm in the struggle for democratic governance,” Idris said.
He paid tribute to the memory of Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale, MKO Abiola, and acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in the pro-democracy movement.
The minister noted that this year’s celebration coincides with the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration.
He said the press conference was organised to give Nigerians and the international community an overview of the administration’s milestones, challenges, and the vision guiding the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Today’s Press Conference has been organised to provide Nigerians and the international community with an overview of the administration’s journey over the past three years, the milestones achieved, the challenges encountered, and the vision that continues to guide the government’s efforts,” he said.
Idris invited the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who represented President Tinubu, to deliver the keynote address.
