The member representing Ohafia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Kalu Mba-Nwoke, has called on the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa to mandate NEWMAP to re-include Elu-Amuke erosion site in the list of European Union NEWMAP intervention projects.
Hon. Mba-Nwoke alleged that vested political interest of the former NEWMAP Project Director (name withheld), made him replace Elu-Amuke erosion site in the European Union NEWMAP Intervention Project, emphasising that there is need to act swiftly to avert further danger the erosion site poses to the people of the community.
Speaking while presenting a matter of public urgent importance during plenary on Tuesday, Mba-Nwoke, said efforts have been made by the affected community to ensure that the erosion site is given urgent attention by NEWMAP, frowning that this has not been possible.
He informed the House that the President General of Ohafia Improvement Union, Chief Prince Kalu Ikpemini had officially written a letter to the office of the Speaker through his Office, praying the House to intervene on the issue.
Responding to the prayers, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, advised Hon. Mba-Nwoke to redirect the matter through the Chairman House Committee on Environment and revert back to the House at a future legislative date.
Over the years, erosion have continued to wreak havoc in communities in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State with Ekeugolo erosion site Ebem, Ndi Ukpolo erosion site Ebem, Ndi Inyima compound erosion site Ebem among erosion sites begging for intervention from NEWMAP and relevant authorities.
