Sixty-one of the 81 opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives have nominated Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere as the next Minority Leader following the defection of Kingsley Chinda from the PDP to the APC.

‎The nomination letter, addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, was signed by lawmakers from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, ADC, APGA, Labour Party, LP, PRP, APP, APM, SDP, and Accord Party, according to the signatories.

‎Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/South Federal Constituency of Imo State and chairs the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, Downstream, would assume the position if recognised by the House leadership.

‎However, rival moves have emerged within the opposition caucus. Some lawmakers are reportedly backing Hon. Frederick Agbedi of Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, Bayelsa State, for the role.

‎Those opposing Ugochinyere argue that he belongs to the Action Peoples Party, APP, which has only two members in the House. They also contend that since Chinda, who vacated the position, is from the South, the position should remain in the zone.

‎Meanwhile, attention is now focused on Speaker Abbas Tajudeen on whether the House leadership will formally recognise the nomination submitted by the 61 opposition lawmakers.
