Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has said 27 years of uninterrupted democracy proves the resilience of the Nigerian spirit despite economic pressures, security concerns, social tensions and political contests.
Kalu, who is also the 6th Citizen of Nigeria, stated this on Monday in a post on X as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day.
“Twenty-seven years ago, Nigeria embarked on a democratic journey marked by both progress and challenges. Yet, through it all, our democracy has endured,” he wrote.
He noted that democracy is not defined by elections alone, but by its ability to improve lives, expand opportunities, protect freedoms, and foster national unity.
“As lawmakers, we recognize that democracy is not defined by elections alone. Its true value lies in its ability to improve lives, expand opportunities, protect freedoms, and foster national unity,” Kalu said.
He added that the National Assembly remains committed to enacting laws that drive economic growth, promote social justice, strengthen security, advance education and innovation, and support sustainable development.
“As we celebrate this milestone, let us renew our commitment to building a Nigeria where institutions work effectively, opportunities are accessible to all, and every citizen can realize their God-given potential,” he said.
Kalu said the House of Representatives will continue to work with all arms and levels of government to build a more stable, prosperous, and inclusive nation.
“The journey continues, and so does our faith. With unity, determination, and hope, Nigeria’s best days remain ahead of us,” he added.
