Bandits killed three Federal Road Safety Commission officers in an ambush along the Tsamiya–Illo road in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State at the weekend, local sources said.

‎The victims were identified as Deputy Corps Marshal and Route Commander Umar Aliyu, Senior Route Marshal Assistant Ezra Manu Gona, and Route Marshal Assistant I Mansur Ibrahim Nasir.

‎According to local sources, the officers were on official duty when attackers on motorcycles ambushed them. “They tried to escape from the bandits who were on bike but they pursued them with their motorcycles and killed them before they could escape into the bush,” one source said.

‎Witnesses said the bandits, numbering over 20, retreated into the bush on motorcycles immediately after the attack.

‎The source added that bandits frequently target security operatives in the area. “They are always coming to attack security operatives in this area. This is about the fifth time they are coming to kill security officers at their duty post in this area,” he said.

‎Security operatives at the Tsamiya axis of Bagudo have come under repeated attacks by bandits and Lakurawa insurgents in recent months.

‎Before this incident, more than 10 officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Police Force had been killed by armed groups in the Tsamiya/Maje axis of Bagudo in the last one year, according to local accounts.

‎As of the time of filing this report, the Kebbi State Command of the FRSC had not issued an official statement on the killings. Calls to the command’s public relations officer were not returned.

‎Meanwhile, Governor Nasir Idris convened an emergency security meeting at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi at the weekend to address rising insecurity in the state. He expressed concern over recent attacks and vowed that informants would face the full weight of the law.

‎“My administration will not tolerate or spare anyone found to be an informant. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law, and justice will be served,” the governor said.
