The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has dismissed Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s description of the party as “dead,” insisting it remains vibrant, expanding, and positioned to reclaim power.
In a statement in Abuja by National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, the party said it continues to attract prominent figures, record electoral wins, and rebuild its structures nationwide.
“The PDP is alive. The PDP is strong. The PDP is rebuilding,” the statement said, adding that parties derive legitimacy from public support, not opponents’ opinions.
The PDP cited recent developments to back its claim: Iyabo Obasanjo’s association with the party, the reported entry of Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, victory in Adamawa local government elections, success in the Rivers Senate bye-election, and what it called a steady influx of leaders from Katsina, Jigawa, Imo, Oyo and other states.
It said Akpabio’s remarks at an FCT road commissioning, where he urged the FCT Minister to “allow what is dead to remain dead,” reflected “political wishful thinking.”
The party also pointed to what it called an irony: the project was supervised by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, whom it described as a distinguished PDP member serving in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“It is contradictory to commission the achievements of a PDP man in the morning and declare the PDP politically irrelevant in the afternoon,” it said.
The PDP added that criticisms from the ruling party stem from concern over its internal consolidation and growing public acceptance. It expressed confidence Nigerians would entrust it with power again, promising “purposeful, inclusive and people-centred leadership.”
The party also commended Wike for delivering infrastructure in the FCT, saying it reinforces the PDP’s “culture of competence.”
Reaffirming its position, the PDP declared it remains “alive, healthy and a beautiful bride on hot demand,” and said it is well positioned to win future elections.
