Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has signed the Benue State Electricity Law 2026 into law, a legislation aimed at strengthening power generation, transmission and distribution across the state.
‎
‎The governor assented to the bill on Monday during a ceremony at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi.
‎
‎The development was announced in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula.
‎
‎According to the government, the law establishes a legal framework to improve electricity access, attract investment, and accelerate industrial development in Benue.
‎
‎Officials said the legislation will enhance power supply to homes, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities by encouraging private participation in generation and distribution.
‎
‎The government added that improved electricity infrastructure will lower operating costs for businesses by reducing dependence on generators, boost productivity and competitiveness, and create employment opportunities for young people.
‎
‎The law also provides stronger consumer protection through enforcement of consumer rights, fair billing, improved service delivery, and faster resolution of complaints.
‎
‎It further supports rural electrification by extending power infrastructure to underserved communities, with expected benefits for healthcare, education, agriculture and security.
‎
‎Authorities expressed confidence that the law will drive sustainable economic growth, improve living standards, and position Benue for increased industrialisation.
