Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has unveiled plans to sponsor a constitutional amendment bill seeking to replace Nigeria’s current two-term tenure structure for presidents and governors with a single six-year term.
He disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday.
According to Bamidele, the proposal is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at improving governance, reducing the distractions of re-election campaigns, and strengthening democratic institutions.
Beyond constitutional reforms, the Senate Leader called on the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, to publicly disclose the salaries, allowances and benefits of all public office holders. He said the move would address misconceptions about lawmakers’ earnings.
Bamidele also defended the Senate’s decision against a public probe of military spending during ongoing counterterrorism operations.
He contended that existing oversight mechanisms remain in place.
The Senate Leader further backed tougher anti-kidnapping measures, including the death penalty for convicted offenders.
On the “rubber stamp” allegations, Bamidele rejected claims that the 10th Senate operates as a rubber stamp for the executive.
Many Nigerians have accused the current Senate of approving executive proposals without sufficient scrutiny.
He maintained that collaboration with the presidency has helped advance key reforms in taxation, education, agriculture and economic development.
