The Nigerian Army has announced a major shake-up of senior officers, with a new commander appointed to lead Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast less than two years after the last appointment.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday approved the strategic redeployment of senior officers to key command, operational and staff positions across the country.
According to the Army, the move is aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and aligning the Army’s command structure with Nigeria’s evolving security environment ahead of critical national engagements.
The most significant change is in the Northeast theatre. Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose, previously serving at Army Headquarters in Abuja, takes over as commander of Operation Hadin Kai from Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar. Abubakar became the operation’s 15th commander in April 2025.
The leadership change comes just months to the January presidential elections, with insecurity still a major concern across parts of the country. Years of insurgency by Boko Haram and its Islamic State-backed splinter group, ISWAP, have killed more than 40,000 people and displaced millions since 2009, according to data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.
Security challenges also disrupted voting in parts of the Northeast during the last presidential election.
The Army said the redeployment was not linked to any specific attack, but was part of a wider shake-up involving 14 other generals. Army spokesperson, Appolonia Anele, said the exercise prioritizes key operational theatres and strategic appointments to “position the right commanders and staff officers to deliver decisive results.”
“The exercise is designed to align the Army’s command structure with Nigeria’s evolving security environment while ensuring that critical operational theatres are led by officers with the right experience, expertise and leadership capacity,” the statement read.
The timing of the reshuffle also coincided with a visit by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Retd), to the Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology in Kachia, Kaduna State, on Wednesday.
Analysts say the changes signal the military’s intent to tighten command ahead of the polls and to inject fresh leadership into theatres where insecurity remains most persistent.
With Operation Hadin Kai at the center of the fight against insurgency, all eyes will now be on General Ajose to determine if the new leadership can deliver improved results in the final months before Nigerians head to the polls.
