The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a masquerade, identified as “Asoleke”, in connection with the alleged murder of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, in the Labiran area of Ibadan.
The incident occurred on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m. According to the police, the masquerade and its followers allegedly attacked the victim with axes and cutlasses during a procession, inflicting severe injuries.
The case was reported at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters by Mrs. Aderemi, who said she received a distress call from her elder sister about the attack on her younger brother.
The Divisional Police Officer, Mapo Division, led operatives to the scene. The victim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival by the medical doctor on duty.
The police said the scene was processed and photographs taken. The family of the deceased later obtained the corpse for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation.
While the Asoleke masquerade is in custody, four of his alleged followers are still at large. The Command said efforts are ongoing to apprehend them.
The police urged residents to remain calm and provide credible information to aid the investigation.
