The Plateau State Government has urged citizens and stakeholders to exercise restraint following public reactions to a recent High Court judgment on certificates of indigeneship and residency in Jos North Local Government Area.

‎In a statement, the government under Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang said it was concerned that the judgment had generated heated debates capable of heightening tension among communities that have coexisted peacefully for decades.

‎While acknowledging citizens’ right to express views on public matters, the government called for responsibility and caution in public engagements on the issue.

‎The statement noted that Jos North Local Government Council, like any dissatisfied party, retains the constitutional right to seek redress through the appellate process.

‎Government urged all parties to allow due process without resorting to actions or statements that could undermine public peace.

‎“Government remains firmly committed to the rule of law, constitutionalism, and the independence of the Judiciary. We will continue to provide an enabling environment for all residents to lawfully pursue their legitimate activities while respecting local customs, values, and traditions,” the statement read.

‎Government warned that it would not allow individuals or groups with vested interests to exploit the situation to incite hatred, sow division, or undermine Plateau’s peaceful coexistence.

‎It added that issues of indigeneship, citizenship, and residency rights are complex national matters that have featured in constitutional reviews and national conferences.

‎“It would be inappropriate to isolate or reduce these issues to a single Local Government Area. The questions raised transcend Jos North and are part of broader national conversations,” it said.

‎The government called on residents, community and religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed to preserving peace and unity.
