The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has applauded the Supreme Court for launching its Electronic Filing, E-Filing, System and Nigeria Case Management System, NCMS, saying technology is now the future of legal practice.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, Osigwe said, “The Supreme Court has decided that it is better to innovate than to die,” noting that institutions must continually evolve or risk becoming obsolete.
Citing Nokia’s decline for failing to adapt, he said courts, like businesses, must embrace innovation to remain relevant. He argued that the Supreme Court must lead in deploying technology to make justice more efficient, accessible, and responsive.
Osigwe described the E-Filing and NCMS platforms as “landmark developments” in the digital transformation of Nigeria’s justice sector.
“We either innovate or we die,” he said, stressing that adopting technology is no longer optional for legal practitioners.
He also highlighted the NBA’s own digital steps, including the relaunch of the NBA Digital Stamp and Seal and the introduction of the NBA Digital Signature Studio.
The NBA President assured the judiciary of the Association’s support, saying it would organize awareness and capacity-building programmes to help lawyers adopt the new systems.
He congratulated the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, GCON, Supreme Court Justices, the Chief Registrar, and the judiciary for the move.
Osigwe expressed confidence that the systems would improve access to justice, case management, reduce delays, and align Nigeria’s judiciary with global best practices.
