…50 Patients Slated For Surgery
ISUIKWUATO — More than 1,000 patients are benefiting from the ongoing 3-day Hon. Lady Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha Medical and Surgical Outreach, 2026, which commenced on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Isuikwato General Hospital, Isuikwato LGA of Abia State.
The outreach, a pet project of the former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barr. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, is providing free medical support to indigenes and non-indigenes of Isuikwato of all ages.
Addressing newsmen on Day 2 of the outreach at the General Hospital, the Team Lead, Dr. Humble Evuchiawe, represented by his Assistant, Uju Stanley, said the exercise has been going on smoothly.
According to him, the prevalent ailments discovered so far are those common to daily activities. They include hernias, malaria, lipoma, and eye defects, among others.
“The prevalent ailments in this area are what we normally see almost on a day-to-day basis. As it concerns the medical field, something like hernias, they are here. The inguinal, scrotal hernias, there are different types of hernias,” he said.
He identified hernia as a major health challenge in the area, linking it to farming and strenuous labour.
“You know our people, we are known for farmland and also hard work. That is what causes most of the hernias. So, when you do someone’s hernia, you can’t tell him to fold his hands because at that time you see recurrent hernia. Some of them are manual laborers. Some of them do other hard jobs. So, when they do it, they have a relapse,” he explained.
“To prevent recurrence, we use what we call mesh to repair the hernia so that it does not come back again.”
50 Patients Identified For Surgery
Dr. Evuchiawe said the team has identified 50 people for surgeries, out of which three have been successfully carried out. He added that more than 1,000 patients have also been screened for various medical examinations.
He said the team is fully prepared to carry out the surgeries, and patients who cannot be operated on at the centre are being counseled and placed on appropriate medication.
“If there is a situation where we cannot do it surgically here, we counsel them. For those we do surgically here, we also provide medical solutions to the problem. For instance, we give drugs.
“Both the surgical patients and those that we see for medical, we give them drugs. We don’t just see them and send them away like that, we offer the necessary solutions needed,” he said.
He noted that the medical team comprises doctors, nurses, and other professionals across different fields, including surgery and general medicine. “All the fields are represented here. The surgery has already commenced,” he added.
Commendations
A former Executive Chairman of Isuikwuato LGA, Hon. Chima Agbaeze, commended Barr. Onyejeocha for the yearly medical and surgical outreach, describing the initiative as worth replicating.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to newsmen also appreciated Hon. Onyejeocha, noting that she has sustained the service over the years.
The Outreach continues tomorrow with the turnout expected to increase.
