The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from office.
Agbebaku’s resignation followed moves by some lawmakers to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.
His resignation was confirmed on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ivy Ebojele.
Sources within the Assembly said tension had been building in the House over leadership issues, which culminated in signatures being gathered to remove the Speaker.
Ebojele, in a brief statement, said Agbebaku stepped down “in the interest of peace, stability and the progress of the 8th Assembly.”
“The Speaker has resigned his position to allow for smooth legislative activities and to preserve the integrity of the House,” the statement added.
Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected Speaker at the inauguration of the 8th Assembly in 2023.
The House is expected to announce an acting Speaker pending the election of a new one.
