The political outlook ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Abia State is drawing increasing attention, with a group within the All Progressives Congress expressing concerns about the prospects of Governor Alex Otti.
In a statement, the Abia APC Renaissance Group said internal developments within the Labour Party could influence the governor’s re-election chances, citing ongoing leadership disagreements at the national level.
The group pointed to what it described as limited visible participation by the governor in the party’s electronic registration exercise, suggesting this may reflect caution amid the evolving situation within the party. However, the governor has not publicly commented on the matter.
It also referred to recent disputes involving party leadership structures, including differing positions among stakeholders, which have reportedly led to parallel activities by factions. Independent verification of some of these claims remains limited.
According to the group, such divisions could affect party cohesion ahead of primary elections, although the Labour Party leadership has yet to issue a definitive position on the long term implications of the disagreements.
The statement further alleged that there have been calls from some quarters for the governor to consider aligning with the All Progressives Congress. It did not provide verifiable evidence of any formal move, and there has been no official confirmation from Governor Otti regarding a possible defection.
The group also claimed that broader political realignments at the national level, including reported defections by some political figures, may be contributing to uncertainty within opposition parties. These claims could not be independently confirmed.
Meanwhile, the Abia APC Renaissance Group highlighted what it described as growing unity within its ranks in the state, noting recent internal activities as a sign of strengthening organisation ahead of the next electoral cycle.
As political activities gradually gather momentum, analysts say the evolving dynamics within parties are likely to shape the contours of the 2027 governorship contest, although it remains too early to draw definitive conclusions.
