…mandates Committees To Probe South Africa’s Role, Assess Losses
ABUJA — The House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Foreign Affairs and Integration in Africa to investigate and determine the extent to which the South African government may have been complicit in xenophobic attacks against Nigerians.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon. Babajimi Benson at plenary.
The House resolved to assess the losses and casualties suffered by Nigerians, including abandoned properties, during the attacks in South Africa.
Lawmakers also called for diplomatic and legal measures to ensure that those responsible are held accountable in line with international human rights obligations.
Food Safety Surveillance
In another resolution, the House called for stronger food safety surveillance and stricter enforcement by relevant regulatory agencies to address the growing incidence of food contamination across the country.
The lawmakers said improved regulation and monitoring of food production and distribution would help protect public health and reduce the prevalence of food-borne diseases.
