FREETOWN — President Bola Tinubu has called on African countries to speak with one voice to condemn the ongoing Afrophobic attacks, also known as xenophobia, in South Africa.
The President made the call on Sunday in Freetown, Sierra Leone, during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
He was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
According to Tinubu, a united African voice will send a clear message to South Africa that intolerance in any form is unacceptable.
He informed African leaders that the Nigerian Government has “already evacuated over 1,490 of its citizens from harm’s way in seven batches and is prepared to engage further on this matter.”
The President’s statement comes amid renewed concerns over attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
ECOWAS leaders are meeting in Freetown to discuss regional security, economic integration, and other pressing issues affecting West Africa.
