Police in Abia Arrest Woman Over Viral Video Of Alleged Attempted Murder

The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Nwoko Gift, for allegedly attempting to stab her 12-year-old niece with a kitchen knife in a viral video that circulated on social media.

‎In a statement issued on Monday evening by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the suspect, a native of Ehimembano in Imo State but residing at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia, was arrested on July 5, 2026.

‎According to the police, the suspect allegedly attempted to kill Miss Ebo Chimamanda, 12, after the minor refused to spread clothes before the suspect left for the market.

‎Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, who is the aunt of the victim, had repeatedly beaten the girl and threatened to kill her.

‎“Operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, raced to the scene leveraging on actionable intelligence, rescued the victim, apprehended the suspect, and recovered the exhibit knife,” the statement said.

‎The Command said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, and the suspect will be charged with attempted murder at the conclusion of investigation.

‎The police condemned the act and urged members of the public to report cases of child abuse and violence to the nearest police station.

‎“ together we keep Abia safe. See something, say something,” the statement added.
