Presidential Candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Seyi Makinde, has condemned the blockade of the convoy of former Anambra State Governor and Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.
Obi was in Benue on Tuesday for his 2027 presidential campaign and to visit Yelewata to commiserate with victims of the June 2025 attacks.
According to reports, his convoy was stopped a few meters from the airport by youths who mounted a roadblock on the Makurdi-Gboko federal highway, causing traffic congestion.
Reacting in a statement on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Anthony Ehilebo, Makinde described the incident as “deeply disturbing”.
He said setting up roadblocks and using thugs to stop opposition candidates have no place in a constitutional democracy, and cited Sections 40 and 41 of the 1999 Constitution which guarantee freedom of movement, assembly and association.
Makinde also faulted the Benue State Government’s claim that Obi did not seek prior permission before the visit, stating that every Nigerian has a constitutional right to enter and move freely in any part of the country without prior permission.
He called on the Nigerian Police to investigate the incident and bring the culprits to book.
Makinde said the campaign remains committed to a peaceful electoral process but will not be deterred by attempts to obstruct legitimate political activities.
