Popular radio political presenter, Mrs. Anastasia Odochi Uchenna, has declared interest to contest the Aba Central State Constituency seat in the Abia State House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Mrs. Uchenna, known as a “golden voice” on Magic FM, picked her Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms on Monday at the PDP Secretariat in Umuahia.
Addressing newsmen shortly after, she said her decision to join politics was driven by a desire to demonstrate true leadership and service, and to “show how to do the right thing.”
She added that her ambition is also aimed at encouraging Aba women to take active roles in governance.
According to her, women in Aba Central have been relegated for too long, noting that the constituency has not produced a female lawmaker in the past eight years.
“Look at the statistics of voters — women and youths vote more. We vote more, but we’re relegated to the background. They turn us to cheerleaders. We just sing at party meetings. No, we want to change the narrative,” she said.
Mrs. Uchenna insisted the “old order must change,” and promised to deliver real dividends of democracy if the PDP gives her the ticket.
On why she chose the PDP, she explained that one must enter politics through a party with grassroots support and solid structures. “Parties fail elections today in Nigeria because they don’t have the spread. PDP has the spread. There is no ward in Abia State without PDP executives. All we need to do is take charge of those structures and use them to work.”
She said the love shown to her by Aba residents over the years emboldened her decision, adding that seeking to represent them is her way of repaying that support with quality representation.
Reacting to insinuations that she has a godfather bankrolling her ambition, Mrs. Uchenna dismissed the claims. “God is my godfather. Women are bankrolling me. I hear women say it’s time for a woman to be there. So if you ask me who is bankrolling me, I’ll say women are bankrolling me.”
The broadcaster said her nearly 20 years of analysing politics on radio has equipped her to identify problems and proffer solutions. “I will focus on the progress of the people. I will do things differently because I’m not the conventional politician. I’m not a professional politician — I’m a journalist. I’ve sat behind the mic for years, talking politics, analyzing issues, knowing where the problem is. Now I want to bring that knowledge and experience to bear.”
