Imo State First Lady, Mrs Chioma Uzodimma, has described widowhood as one of the most vulnerable experiences a woman can face, noting that for millions of women, the pain of loss is worsened by dispossession, discrimination, and harmful traditional practices.

‎Mrs Uzodimma made the remarks on Tuesday in a statement posted on her X handle to mark International Widows Day.

‎She said the GoodHope Women Flourish Initiative, her pet project, reaffirms its commitment to standing with widows across Imo State.

‎“These are women of immense strength who rebuild their lives, raise their children, and contribute to their communities despite overwhelming odds,” she stated.

‎The First Lady stressed that widowhood must never translate to poverty, isolation, or indignity.

‎“We believe that widowhood must never be a sentence to poverty, isolation, or indignity. Through our programmes, we remain committed to ensuring that widows have the tools, support, and opportunities to flourish,” she said.

‎Mrs Uzodimma called for collective action to protect the rights and dignity of widows, declaring: “No widow should grieve alone. No widow should be stripped of her rights. No widow should be left behind.”

‎International Widows Day is observed annually on June 23 to draw attention to the challenges faced by widows worldwide and to promote their rights and welfare.
