House Of Reps Passes Bill To Establish State Police

ABUJA — The House of Representatives has passed the Constitution Alteration Bill for the establishment of State Police Services in Nigeria.

‎This followed consideration and voting on the provisions of the Executive Bill at the Committee of the Whole chaired by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.

‎Amidst a rowdy session, the Speaker announced that 311 members voted in favour of the bill.

‎Bill To Deepen Federalism
‎
‎Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, led the debate for the consideration and passage of the bill.
‎
‎He stressed that it is intended to deepen Nigeria’s federal system by decentralising policing, improving public safety, and giving states a greater role in protecting lives and property.
‎
‎The passage of the bill marks a major step toward constitutional amendment on policing in Nigeria. It will however still require concurrence by the Senate and approval by at least 24 state Houses of Assembly before becoming law.
