ENUGU — The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 6,240 suspects and recovered 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition in the last 17 months.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this during a working visit by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, AIG Miller Gajere Dantawaye, to the Command Headquarters in Enugu.
CP Giwa said the arrests, made between March 11, 2025 and September 4, 2026, included 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 armed robbery suspects, 188 murder suspects, 57 suspects for rape and defilement, 273 cultism suspects, and 63 suspects for unlawful possession of firearms. He added that 5,315 other suspects were arrested for offences including stealing, breaking and vandalism.
He said the Command also recovered 43 AK-47 rifles, one G-3 assault rifle, and 209 vehicular exhibits comprising motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles. It also rescued 211 kidnapped and abducted victims within the period.
The CP attributed the achievements to sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and inter-state security collaboration.
He highlighted the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, and enhanced emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and Command-and-Control Centre.
He also solicited continued Zonal support, particularly in manpower, operational logistics and personnel welfare.
In his remarks, AIG Dantawaye charged officers of the Enugu State Command to uphold professionalism, discipline, accountability and ethical conduct, with strict adherence to Force regulations and respect for citizens’ rights.
He urged them to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and sustain public confidence in the Police, while expressing his readiness to work with all personnel to further strengthen security in Enugu State.
The engagement was held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu, and was attended by officers and men of the Command cutting across all ranks and formations.
