…reaffirms Commitment To Ending Flooding
MAKURDI — The Benue State Government has cautioned residents against constructing buildings below sea level and along waterways, warning that such practices are major contributors to flash floods and water clogging that lead to submerged properties across the state.
The government said on Saturday, September 5, 2026, that while it is not opposed to property development, it is important for residents to obtain proper architectural drawings and requisite approvals before commencing any building project.
It also warned against the indiscriminate dumping of waste in drainage channels, noting that blocked drainages, alongside construction on waterways, remain key drivers of the recurring flooding experienced in parts of the state.
The government reassured residents of the unwavering commitment of the Alia-led administration to permanently ending flooding in Benue State.
It said the commitment is reflected in the quality and scale of drainage infrastructure currently being constructed across the state.
Further interventions are already underway through the Benue State Agro-Climatic Watershed Management Agency, which is constructing a two-metre-wide drainage system around Achusah.
The project will connect existing drainages to the river, putting a permanent stop to the recurring floods experienced in affected areas of the state.
The government therefore urged all residents to comply with due process in property development and to desist from activities that obstruct drainage systems, as it continues to implement sustainable, long-term solutions to flooding across Benue State.
