The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has once again appealed to leaders, parents, guardians and elders in the South East zone to encourage young men and women from the region to enlist in the Nigerian Army.
Speaking during the passing-out parade of the 90 Regular Recruits at the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda, Afikpo North and Edda Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State, Shaibu lamented that the recruitment quota allocated to the South East has not been fully utilized in recent years.
A total of 2,989 newly trained soldiers passed out at the ceremony.
The COAS said the trend should not be allowed to continue, describing military service as “not just a career, but an honourable endeavour of patriotism, leadership, and national contribution.”
”The newly established military training depot here in Amasiri-Edda is your own,” he told stakeholders in the zone. “I implore you to see it as such and encourage our youths to take advantage of it.”
The Amasiri-Edda training depot was established by the Federal Government in November last year to serve the South East zone.
Addressing the new soldiers, Lt. Gen. Shaibu said the training they had received was meant to prepare them for the tasks ahead and serve as a foundation for future professional development.
He noted that security challenges confronting Nigeria and Africa “continue to evolve in complexity and intensity,” and urged the troops to remain disciplined and professional.
The Army Chief also warned against misuse of social media, cautioning the new recruits to strictly adhere to the Nigerian Army’s Social Media Policy.
”The implications of such misconduct are far-reaching,” he said. “For the individual soldier, it represents a loss of career, honour, and livelihood. For the Army, it undermines discipline, operational security, morale, and institutional credibility. Erring personnel will be sanctioned accordingly.”
Governor Francis Nwifuru, in his remarks, assured the Army leadership of Ebonyi State’s continued support.
”We shall continue to provide a peaceful and conducive environment for training and military operations while promoting harmonious coexistence between the military and our communities,” the Governor said.
”The donation of land was only the beginning of a long-term partnership founded on mutual respect and our shared aspiration for a safer Ebonyi State and a stronger Nigeria.
”When the idea of establishing this Depot on Ebonyi soil was conceived, we wholeheartedly embraced it because we recognised its strategic importance to our nation and its immense benefits to our people.”
