Boko Haram fighters attacked a Nigerian Army base in Mandaragirau, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State, in the early hours of Friday, killing five soldiers and three Civilian Joint Task Force members.
Lt. Col. Haruna Sani, Acting Media Information Officer, Operation HADIN KAI, said the attack on Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau began at about 3:00 a.m. during heavy rainfall that reduced visibility.
He said troops repelled the assault and inflicted casualties on the attackers.
“Regrettably, five gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the intense firefight, while three CJTF members also fell alongside troops,” Sani stated. He added that wounded personnel were airlifted for treatment and are in stable condition.
Meanwhile, local sources in Biu told newsmen that the insurgents operated in the area for nearly one hour following a heavy downpour.
Sani said the base remains under military control and exploitation operations are ongoing in the area.
He noted that additional troops and equipment have been deployed across the North-East to sustain pressure on terrorist groups.
