CASABLANCA – Marie Ngah Manga scored a first-half penalty as Cameroon defeated Ghana 1-0 to take control of Group D at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The win takes Cameroon to six points and makes them the first team to qualify for the quarterfinals as Group D winners.
Ghana’s meeting with Mali in Casablanca on Thursday is now a shootout for second place. A draw will be enough for the Black Queens to progress due to superior goal difference.
In the other Group D match, Mali beat debutants Cape Verde 3-2 at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium to send the islanders out of the tournament.
Oumou Kone, Fatoumata Niakaté and Fatoumata Diarra scored for Mali, while Evy Pereira and Alivia Kelly replied for Cape Verde. Pereira’s goal was Cape Verde’s first ever at a WAFCON.
With the result, Cape Verde become the first team eliminated from the competition.
