Security forces in Zamfara State have rescued an abducted Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, staff member and thwarted multiple bandit attacks in coordinated operations in Talata Mafara and Gusau Local Government Areas.
According to a statement by the police, heavily armed bandits on about 50 motorcycles raided communities in Talata Mafara, rustled hundreds of cattle and abducted an INEC official identified as Aliyu Mohammed.
The official was said to have just completed the transportation of NECO examination materials to Sokoto. Police said his Toyota Hilux and the examination papers were later recovered intact.
Acting on intelligence, operatives of the Police VCRU, alongside military personnel, engaged the bandits in Gando Forest. The attackers reportedly fled with casualties.
The abducted INEC official and another victim were rescued unharmed. Hundreds of stolen cattle were also recovered and returned to their owners.
In a separate operation in Gusau LGA, Police VCRU and PMF personnel responded to a bandit ambush and rescued all abducted farmers and travelers after the attackers fled.
Security agencies have been commended for their bravery and commitment to protecting lives and communities in the state.
