The Federal Government has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa and is demanding an urgent investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

‎In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mr. Emeka Charles Iroegbu was allegedly killed by Tshwane Metro Police officers on June 28th in Pretoria. On the same day, Mr. Musa Yunana Joe, popularly known as “Big Joe”, was shot dead in front of his shop in Witbank.

‎The Ministry noted that on April 20, 2026, the same officers were allegedly responsible for the extra-judicial killing of another Nigerian, Mr. Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong.

‎The Federal Government expressed concern over what it described as the targeting of Nigerians amid rising xenophobic protests in South Africa. It condemned unguarded public statements by some South African officials, describing them as hate speech.

‎The statement also accused leaders of groups such as March and March and Operation Dudula of inciting violence and hate against fellow Africans, adding that they would be held to account under regional and international law.

‎”The Federal Government calls on South African authorities to conduct urgent investigations into these killings and several other pending cases of extra-judicial killings of Nigerian nationals and bring perpetrators to justice. All options remain on the table if this trend continues,”the statement said.

‎The Ministry added that the evacuation process for registered Nigerians in affected areas is ongoing.
