The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has called on the Tinubu administration to “immediately and unconditionally” release journalist Omoyele Sowore and drop all charges against him.
SERAP made the call on X on Tuesday.
The organisation said Sowore is being detained “solely for the peaceful exercise of his fundamental human rights.”
Citing the UN Human Rights Committee’s General Comment No. 34 on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, ICCPR, SERAP said criticism of public figures does not warrant criminal penalties.
“The Nigerian authorities must end the harassment and unjust prosecution of critics and ensure that everyone can freely exercise their right to freedom of expression,” it stated.
