The Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency, Chief Uzo Ihuka, has called for collective responsibility in tackling the world drug problem.
In a statement to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Ihuka said the persistence of drug abuse and trafficking despite efforts by government, NGOs, and other partners shows that the challenge requires a united front.
“This year’s theme, ‘World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, Challenges,’ admits that despite efforts by government, NGOs among other partners, the problem of drug abuse and trafficking has persisted” Ihuka stated.
He emphasised that “the adverse effects of drug abuse on youths has taken a new dimension,” and stressed the need for all stakeholders to join forces to end the menace in society and save the lives of the youths who are leaders of tomorrow.
The APC candidate for Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency said that attention must be channeled towards addressing the underlying issues pushing youths into drugs.
“If I emerge the Representative of Isiala Ngwa North/South, much of my responsibility will be to engage the youths in meaningful ventures that will dissuade them from taking drugs and trafficking it,” he said.
Ihuka urged youths in Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency to use the occasion to reduce their demand for illicit drugs, noting that doing so will mitigate the threats posed by drug abuse and trafficking.
He reaffirmed his commitment to championing youth empowerment and drug prevention initiatives at the National Assembly if elected.
