Former CBN Deputy Governor Prof. Kingsley Moghalu says Nigeria’s inability to defeat terrorism stems from the absence of a shared national identity.

‎Moghalu, President of the African School of Governance, argued on Monday that the country has failed to forge a common political, civic, ethnic and historical identity needed to unite citizens against security threats.

‎“Nigeria’s failure to overcome terrorism is driven by the failure to be a nation. We do not regard our problem as a common problem,” he said.

‎According to him, terrorism persists because many Nigerians do not see insecurity as a collective challenge requiring a united response.

‎He noted that countries facing external threats mobilize effectively when citizens share a strong sense of nationhood and purpose.

‎Moghalu added that internal divisions have weakened efforts to confront violent extremist groups.

‎He also cited recurring allegations of collusion between security personnel and terrorists as evidence of deeper structural problems.

‎Nigeria has battled insurgency, banditry and kidnapping for over a decade, mainly in the North-East and North-West.

‎The former presidential candidate said addressing the crisis will require more than military action. He stressed the need for stronger institutions, national cohesion and inclusive governance.
